Lawrence’s Bill to Eliminate Statute of Limitations on Violent Offenses Signed Into Law Denver – Today, the Governor signed Representative Polly Lawrence’s (R-Littleton) bill that elimina tes the statute of limitations for felonies committed during sexual assaults. Under current law, there is no statute of limitations on the prosecution of a sexual assault, but there are for accompanying felonies, suc h as burglary or kidnapping. With the signing of Senate Bill 059, the statute of limitations for these accom panying crimes is eliminated, ensuring all felonies committed during a sexual assault can be prosecuted. “Sexual predators should not be able to hide behind the statute of limitations on additional crimes they have committed, and now they no longer can,” said Lawrence. “This law will ensure these sexual predators will now be prosecuted to the full extent of the law for all crimes committed, regar dless of how much time has passed.” Senate Bill 059 will go into effect on July 1, 2014 and applies to offenses committed on or after July 1, 2011.
